Percy Charles Bartle was born in Timworth (Thingoe Q4-1888 4A:682), son of Arthur and Mary Jane BARTLE (née BLAKE).
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 53 Northgate Street, Bury St Edmunds with his father Arthur BARTLE [27] maltster's labourer born Timworth; his mother Mary Jane [26] born West Stow; half-sister Alice Maud BLAKE [6] born Bury St Edmunds; brother Arthur [6 months] born Little Livermere. 1901 census...Aged 12, he was at The Street, Fornham St.Martin with his parents; brothers Arthur and Cecil [8]; sisters Edith E [5] and Evelyn E [1]. The new siblings all born in Fornham St Martin. In 1910 he married Ethel ROYAL (b.13-4-1888). 1911 census...Aged 22, single (?) a maltster's labourer, he was at 56 Wetmore Road,Burton on Trent lodging with Harry and Adelaide FULLER. His wife Ethel [22] born Blindleyheath, Surrey and daughter [under 1 month] born Timworth, were at Timworth with Ethel's parents, Walter and Louisa ROYAL. His parents were at Street, Timworth with his brothers Arthur (woodman) and Cecil (farm labourer); sisters Evelyn Esther,Lily Ethel [8] born Fornham St Martin and Elsie Violet [6] born Timworth. All 7 siblings survived. The pension card has his widow at The Street, Timworth with their two daughters, Grace Lilian (b.16-3-1911) and Ethel May (31-5-1913). She married Frederick H.BISHOP in 1924 |

He enlisted in Ampton. Being wounded and dying in a casualty clearing station there is no way of telling exactly when or where he was wounded. The 9th Suffolk had been in camp or support for some weeks, in the Poperinghe area, and suffered a few spasmodic deaths and woundings.
